Lancashire takes its name from the city of Lancaster, althought still considered to be the county town, Lancashire County Council is based in Preston. The total population is aroung 1.5 million people who are known as Lancastrians. In the Lancaster Houses district the most densely populated areas are Morecambe, Heysham and Carnforth.
In 1974 due to border reform Liverpool and Manchester with most of their surrounding conurbations were removed from Lancashire to form the counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester. During this time, the northern part of Lancashire in the Lake District (Cartmel and Furness Peninsula), formed part of Cumbria. Today the borders of Lancashire are; Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cumbria and North and West Yorkshire.
Along the Fylde coast the main concentration of residential addresses are Blackpool Houses which have numerous sattelite towns and villages the main of those being; Cleveleys, Fleetwood and Lytham-St-Annes.
Preston Houses are very sought after as they are affordable yet have excellent transport links to the whole of Lancashire.
